Harold Thomas Foster, Jr.

Dr. Harold Thomas Foster, Jr., passed away in his home with his family at his bedside on September 28, 2015. He was born on April 21, 1930, to his parents Lorene Hardwick Foster and Harold Thomas Foster, Sr. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Martha Powell Foster, his son, Hal Foster, and his sister, Jimmy Lou Boult. He was a lifelong attendee at the Broad Street Church of Christ where he was baptized as a teenager and remained faithful until his death. Tom and Martha became sweethearts in high school and remained sweethearts until his death. They married in 1952 and she was by his side to share his adventures and his life. Dr. Foster graduated from Jackson County High School in 1948 where he played varsity football. In 1952, he graduated from Auburn University and then continued his graduate studies at the University of Alabama School of Dentistry. In 1956 he received his DMD degree. For 2 years, he served as an officer in the Dental Corp of the U.S. Air Force. In 1959, Dr. Foster started his dental practice in Scottsboro. His retirement in 1990 ended 30 years of wonderful patient/doctor relationships in Jackson County. At a very young age he started a lifetime love affair with hunting and the outdoors which took him to 6 continents and 16 countries. He dreamed of going to Africa and fulfilled that dream in 1980 with the first of seven wonderful safaris. He had a great appreciation of God’s creation and respect for the animals that he hunted. From rabbits to lions, the hunt was always exciting, and having left the life that he enjoyed so much, he has gone on another adventure in ‘the happy hunting ground”. He was a founder of the Alabama Chapter of Safari Club International, serving as the Club’s first President and later serving on its Board of Directors. Safari Club recognized Tom’s hunting achievements with various awards including The Doug Willey Memorial Award, the Club’s highest honor. For many years, he and Martha hosted a dove shoot for the entire Alabama Chapter. It was always a hot barreled affair, followed by a barbeque supper and chapter meeting. While his passion for hunting carried him to remote corners of the globe, Tom was most at home in the Alabama woods where he hunted dozens of days each year for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and any other species that happened to be in season. Tom was also a member and supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Grand Slam/OVIS, and several other shooting, hunting, and conservation organizations. In lieu of flowers please honor his memory with a donation to the charity of your choice. Visitation will be Friday, October 2, 2015, from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at Scottsboro Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service following at 11:00 am. Dr. Jack Wilhelm will be officiating the service. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
