Mrs. Mary Helen Nixon (Linkous)

Mary Helen Nixon (Linkous) passed away on June 3, 2019 in Owens Crossroads, Alabama at the age of 80. She was the daughter of the late William Ballard Linkous and Helen Augusta Wall. Born and raised in Blacksburg Virginia, she met her loving husband, Grady Nixon, while working as a legal assistant. They married on December 19, 1958 on the lawn of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church with her sister, Catherine (Kitty) Linkous, as their witness. Mary was a wonderful devoted wife for 60 years; following Grady to Michigan, Florida, Georgia and Alabama supporting his career. She was a compassionate and loving mother. She stayed busy raising five children, volunteering at church and working as a teaching assistant when her children where in school at Grace Baptist in Prattville, Alabama. Mary had a true servant’s heart, always giving to others ahead of herself. She was an accomplished cook and liked to read and sew. She enjoyed volunteering with youth at her church and spent many years as an AWANA leader where she encouraged children to learn God’s word; serve Him and serve others. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Powell, Alabama until her health made it difficult for her to attend. Mary is survived by her husband, Grady Nixon, her five children and their spouses; Chris and LaVina Nixon, Deborah and Mark Buttgereit, Mary and Keith Livingston, Rachael and Martin Roland, and Becky Nixon-Williamson. She was a loving grandmother to her sixteen grandchildren and touched each of their lives in a special way; Taylor Nixon, Clint Livingston, Savannah Roland, Alayna (Nixon) Calhoun, Alexandria Buttergerit, McKinley (Livingston) Hansen, Cole Williamson, Lena Buttergerit, Britton Roland, Mary Claire Livingston, Preston Williamson, Amanda Buttergerit, Mason Williamson, Ian Livingston, Haley Williamson, and Lauren (Roland) New. Mary is also survived by her two sisters, Jane Hungary, of Blacksburg, Virginia; Catherine (Kitty) Duncan of Lexington, North Carolina and one brother, Bruce Linkous of Bedford, Virginia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held at Scottsboro Funeral Home in Scottsboro, Alabama on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 1:30. Visitation with the Family will begin at 12:30. Taylor Nixon, Student Minister at Crosspoint UMC of Niceville, Florida, will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend. Interment will be private.
