Mrs. Lisa Hambrick Barfoot

Lisa Hambrick Barfoot, age 65, of Scottsboro, Alabama, died on February 19, 2024, at home after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Lisa was born in December 5, 1958, in Scottsboro to the late Samuel Blair Hambrick and Edith Ricketts Hambrick. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Houston Barfoot and her brother-in-law, Timothy Carstarphen Burgess. Lisa is survived by her sisters, Jan Hambrick Hodgson (Bill) and Joy Hambrick Burgess; nieces, Blair duQuesnay (Henry Clay) and Emily Adair Burgess; nephew, Bill Hodgson, Jr.; great nephew, Bobby duQuesnay and great niece, Anne duQuesnay. Lisa was an active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church where she served as a member of the Altar Guild and was a member of the Daughters of the King. Lisa was active in bible study and book clubs. She taught her parents’ Budding Sunday School Class at the First United Methodist Church for many years. Lisa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors from Auburn University,1981, a Juris Doctor from Cumberland School of Law,1984 and a Master of Arts from Auburn University Montgomery, 1999. She did additional coursework in Education and History at Auburn University Montgomery, 2004-2005. Lisa began her career in the Office of the Attorney General of Alabama in 1984-85 before becoming In-House Counsel for Caduceus Capital Corporation, 1985-86 and then worked at Kaufman, Rothfeder & Blitz, P.C., 1986-89. Lisa’s love for hospitality and cooking took her to the International Foundation in Washington, D.C. in 1990. She did a Culinary Internship in Hospitality at the Cedars, 1990-91. Lisa became a Food Consultant and Events Coordinator at C Street Center, 1991-1993. Lisa returned to Montgomery to begin a Master’s program in Education. She began teaching at Trinity Presbyterian School in 1996-2004. She was a Secondary Teacher of English and Humanities, teaching Ninth Grade English, Eleventh Grade Western Humanities, Seventh Grade Creative Writing, Eleventh Grade AP Language and Composition and Twelfth Grade AP Literature and Composition. Lisa served as Assistant Teacher for Trinity’s European Summer Studies Abroad for several years and Assistant Forensics Coach, 2001-2004. Lisa and Jim moved to Scottsboro in 2004, and Lisa began teaching at her Alma Mater, Scottsboro High School. She taught Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Grade English, as well as, Dual Enrollment. She was the National Honor Society Sponsor for three years and the Freshman Class Sponsor for a number of years before her illness forced her to retire. Lisa was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, education honorary and Kappa Delta Sorority. The family would like to thank Dr. Tyler Kirby and his wonderful staff at T.V.G.O. for their excellent care and all the staff of Heartlite Hospice of Scottsboro who have been like family throughout her illness. A memorial service for Lisa will be held on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 402 South Scott St., Scottsboro, AL. 35768 at 2:00 pm. A reception and time to visit with the family will follow at the church in Bradford Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to The Lisa Barfoot Memorial Scholarship Fund at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for those seeking theological education.
